Once a man had a strange goose. It laid an egg of gold daily. Soon he grew very rich. But he was not satisfied with getting one egg of gold a day. He was a greedy fellow.

Once day he thought seriously about the goose. He concluded that the body of the goose must be full of golden eggs. He said to himself, “If I cut the goose open, I shall get all the eggs at one time”.

So he took a knife and killed the goose. He cut it open and began to look for a number of golden eggs. There was none to be found. The greedy man beat his brow. He repented of his folly. He had lost the goose that laid the golden eggs.

Once there were three friends, utterly disgusted with their unemployment. They set out on a long journey to try their luck. They promised to stand by one another through thick and thin. Having covered a long distance, they were tired and the cool shade of the trees tempted them. So they sat down under a cool shady to relax. When they were sitting and enjoying a chat, they caught sight of a bag lying at some distance. They hurried towards it. They opened it and opened it and found it full of gold coins. Their joy knew no bounds. They were pleased at the stroke of good fortune. The bag was a promise for their prosperity in the future. They decided to divide the coins equally among themselves. But their inherent selfishness, meanness, and greed came to the forefront. None of them was sincere. Each, in his heart of hearts, had the desire to grab the whole treasure. Actually, all were ignorant of the laws of nature. They forgot that greed is curse.

As the evening approached, they sent one of them to the nearby city to fetch food. The man who was sent to bring food had evil designs in his mind. He thought of poisoning the food to kill the other ones left in the rear. The two friends left back in the forest were equally greedy. They hatched a conspiracy to kill their friend on his return. So all were sowing the same thing and all were going to reap the same. In fact, our actions depend upon our intentions and the intentions of all were bad. Everyone was digging a pit for the other and everyone was to fall into it. No sooner did the third friend come back from the city with poisoned food than they fell upon him and put him to death. They were happy at the success of their plan. They did not know that destiny was also waiting for them. As they were hungry, without a moment’s delay, they took the meal hastily. The poisoned food showed its effect and the law of nature asserted itself. Both embraced their fate and died in the same spot. So all three fell prey to greed and temptation and the gold lay where it was, We learn from this story that greed is one of the deadly sins which bring about the destruction of mankind.

Most of people are so overtaken by greed that they are not patient enough to wait for bright prospects. They want to be very prosperous within a very short time. Secondly, greed makes them crazy. Greedy people are never satisfied with what they have got, but they always wish to get what they do not have at present. The story of such a greedy man who killed his hen that laid the golden eggs will prove the truth of the saying: “Greed is a curse.”

Once there lived a man in a town. He was very poor, but at the same time, he was very ambitious. He kept on dreaming about good happy times. He prayed to God to make him rich. He thought that wealth would become a source of satisfaction for him. Anyhow, his prayer was accepted. One day he found that his hen had laid a golden egg. He was overjoyed. He sold that golden egg and got plenty of money. The hen laid a golden egg every third day.

After a few months, he became a very rich man of the town. Everyone envied his fortunes, but he was not satisfied. He kept on dreaming about even happier times. Wealth had, in fact, made him greedy and unwise. He made a foolish plan. He wished to get all the eggs at one time. He thought that in this way he would become the richest man of the town. He told this plan to his wife. She was a sensible woman. She asked him to be satisfied with whatever he had. She further told him to patiently wait for better times. The man did not accept her advice. Greed had made him insane. He wanted to be the richest man in the town in a short time. So he continued with his plan.

The next day he killed the hen, hoping that he would get many eggs of gold from the hen. He was overjoyed to think that soon he would have a lot of wealth. But he was shocked to find that there was only one egg in the belly of the hen. He became sad and gloomy. He felt sorry for his foolish act but it was too late. He himself brought his fortune to ruins. Impatience and greed for money had made him crazy and foolish. What he had done could not be undone.

The greedy fellow was ashamed by everyone for what he had done. His family and friends started cursing him. He had got a golden opportunity, but he spoiled it because of his unwise and greedy nature. In the end, he did realize his folly, but then it was too late.
